Haiphong container terminal opens in Vietnam

North Vietnam’s Haiphong International Container Terminal (HICT) has been officially opened at the new Lach Huyen port.

Designed to handle 14,000TEU containerships, the 45-hectare port includes two 750-metre berths, a 14-metre channel and a 16-metre turning basin.

The terminal allows a maximum annual trade volume of 1.1 million TEU.

Mitsui OSK Lines said the terminal will offer shorter transit times and lower transport costs since large-size container vessels with direct links to Asia, North America and Europe can call at the port.

The Lach Huyen Port construction project is the first public-private partnership (PPP) between the governments of Japan and Vietnam.

The terminal is operated by a joint venture company Haiphong International Container Terminal Co, which is owned by Mitsui OSK Lines (17.5 per cent), Saigon Newport Company (51 per cent), Wan Hai Lines (16.5 per cent) and ITOCHU Corporation (15 per cent).
