South Korean Navy’s fourth Daegu-class frigate enters service

The South Korean Navy formally welcomed its newest frigate into service in a ceremony on Wednesday, November 10.

Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the 122- by 14-metre ROKS Donghae is the fourth frigate under the Daegu-class, which will total eight ships. The frigates will be equipped for conducting anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare missions.

A combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) arrangement consisting of four MTU 12V4000 M53B diesel engines and a Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine propels the ship to a maximum speed of 30 knots. Cruising at 18 knots will enable it to cover 4,500 nautical miles in between refuelings.

Donghae will be based out of its namesake port on South Korea’s east coast and will operate mainly in the Sea of Japan.
