The Philippine Coast Guard has deployed rescue boats and other assets to the southern province of Surigao Del Sur to evacuate affected residents after torrential rains caused heavy flooding in a number of towns on Sunday, February 21.

The rains, as well as 40-knot sustained winds, were brought about by Tropical Storm Dujuan, the first tropical cyclone to make landfall in the Philippines this year. No casualties resulting from the storm have yet been reported.

The coast guard has also been engaged in evacuating residents from other coastal areas in the storm’s path in addition to ordering the temporary suspension of commercial sea travel in affected provinces.
