Danish government proposes sending frigate to bolster maritime security in Red Sea

The Danish government has consulted with the Danish Foreign Policy Committee about the possibility of deploying a warship to support US-led international efforts to protect civilian shipping traffic in the Red Sea.

The government entered into the discussions following a series of recent attacks and attempted attacks against commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

According to the country’s Ministry of Defence, the planned deployment is in response to the fact that the security situation in the area has worsened with the use of ballistic missiles and drones becoming more frequent along with hijackings of ships.

The proposal will be sent to the Danish parliament for official approval. If approved, the deployment will proceed before the end of January.
