Faroe Islands-based salmon farming company Bakkafrost has begun operations of its newest delousing vessel.

The 73-metre Bakkanes will later be used by Bakkafrost subsidiary Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) for its operations in the UK.

The vessel was originally built in 2006 as a platform supply vessel (PSV). Formerly named Viking Athene, it was operated by Norway’s Eidesvik Offshore prior to its acquisition by Bakkafrost early this year.

Bakkanes underwent conversion work at local shipyard MEST. Among the new equipment installed is a four-line delousing system that will enable the vessel to treat up to 200 tonnes of fish in one hour.

The vessel will undergo further operational trips in the Faroes within the next four weeks before it sails for Scotland.
