The Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) has confirmed its plans to purchase two newbuild icebreakers.

Funding for the purchase of two vessels has been set at SEK3.44 billion (US$340 million). The SMA said a third icebreaker will be acquired depending on future service requirements.

The newer icebreakers will replace the country’s existing fleet of three Atle-class vessels that have been in service since the 1970s.
