Fugro has completed a complex six-month offshore site characterisation project on the Sinop peninsula for Turkish nuclear energy company EUAS International.

Fugro said the project’s results will support feasibility studies for the second nuclear power plant to be built in Turkey. Specifically, the acquisition, analysis, and advice revealed new information on the site’s subsurface conditions to help engineers in the safe design of the nuclear plant’s nearshore structures and earthquake safety measures.

The project scope encompassed a series of geological, geotechnical, and geohazard tasks for site characterisation, including cone penetration testing and sampling, and continuous rock coring from 20 metres to 500 metres water depths, in challenging weather conditions.

The advanced geotechnical tests were carried out at Fugro’s Houston laboratory, while the geoconsultancy team in Turkey performed the geo-data integration and geohazard assessments.
