China’s Yangtze River Waterway Bureau recently took delivery of a new large suction dredger from Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding.

Built to a design by the 708 Research Institute of the China Shipbuilding Group, Zhang Jing 10 (“Long Whale 10”) will be used primarily for maintenance dredging of the 12.5-metre-deep middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River but may also be deployed for dredging works in coastal areas.

The dredger has an LOA of 145 metres, a moulded beam of 29.2 metres, a draught of 9.6 metres, and two main engines that deliver a speed of 15 knots. Dredging using the two suction pumps can be performed at depths of up to 50 metres. The vessel also has mud tanks with a total capacity of 13,880 cubic meters, allowing up to 20,010 tonnes of mud to be stored.

Other notable features include a vibration monitoring system, a dynamic positioning system, and an integrated dredge testing system.

Construction of Zhang Jing 10 was completed in compliance to China Classification Society rules.
