Four dead in fishing boat capsizing in Kerala, India

FISHING/AQUACULTURE WEEK

Four people were killed as a result of a fishing vessel capsizing incident that occurred in the Indian state of Kerala on Monday, July 10.

The unnamed vessel was returning to port in Muthalapozhi following completion of fishing activities when it overturned due to strong waves at the entrance to Muthalapozhi Harbour at around 04:00 local time on Monday.

One of the crew was found deceased within hours of the capsizing.

The other three victims were initially reported as missing. Tragically, their bodies were recovered from those same waters on Tuesday, July 11.

Search and rescue (SAR) personnel from the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard, and local police found two of the deceased fishermen near the harbour’s breakwater while the third was located in a nearby lake.

The tragedy has led to ongoing protests by the victims’ families and other local residents, who allege that the government did not exert the necessary effort during the SAR operation.
