Frøy’s 4,500-cubic-metre wellboat Frøy Frohav was launched at Astilleros de Murueta’s Erandio shipyard near Bilbao, Spain, on September 24.
The 87.7-metre-long live-fish carrier has a beam of 20.6 metres and will operate for Norwegian salmon producer SalMar under a long-term agreement. The company expects the vessel to be completed in October 2027.
Frøy announced the SalMar agreement on September 4 alongside a separate long-term agreement covering another service vessel, also slated to enter the latter’s operational fleet.
The companies said the two vessels drew on experience from their current operations and were designed around SalMar’s future requirements.
SalMar group chief executive Frode Arntsen said investment in vessel technology was needed to improve fish welfare and biosecurity. “The new vessels will strengthen our operational capacity and help us carry out our tasks even better going forward.”
Alongside its diesel-electric hybrid propulsion and battery storage, Frøy Frohav has a new well-circulation system that Frøy said in its build announcement is designed to improve water quality for fish while reducing energy use. The company expects shorter, better-routed pipework and a lower lifting height to reduce the power needed for circulation.
The vessel’s modular design is intended to accommodate new technologies as operating requirements change.
Frøy ordered the vessel from Murueta in February 2025, with delivery initially expected in autumn 2027.
