A naming ceremony for a new containership ordered by South Korean shipping company HMM (formerly Hyundai Merchant Marine) was held at the facilities of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) on Thursday, April 23.

HMM Algeciras is the first vessel in a series of 12 to be built by DSME and Samsung Heavy Industries for HMM. It measures 399 by 61 metres and has capacity for 24,000 TEUs, making it the largest containership yet built.

HMM Algeciras, which also departed on its maiden voyage on Thursday, will serve HMM’s Far East-North Europe trade route.
