Sweden buys back second Gotland submarine base

Swedish Armed Forces have reportedly bought back a submarine base at Fårösund, Gotland, after it was sold in the 2000s.

The deal, announced by the Swedish Fortifications Agency (SFA), was subject to government approval.

The SFA said the port was sold in 2004 for SEK18 million (US$2.2 million) and was being bought for SEK20 million.

The acquisition requires the government’s approval by April 16, with the harbour to be taken over on April 30.

If the acquisition of Fårösund is completed, Sweden will control two ports in Gotland after Kappellshamn was bought back in 2016.
