Two people were killed while another 15 have gone missing following a collision between two vessels in Indonesia’s Java Sea on Saturday, April 3.

The country’s Basarnas search and rescue (SAR) agency said the incident involving the wooden-hulled fishing vessel Barokah Jaya and the 30,000-tonne bulk carrier Habco Pioneer, both Indonesian-flagged, occurred at approximately 16:30 local time on Saturday.

The smaller fishing vessel capsized shortly afterwards while the bulk carrier sustained no visible damage.

SAR teams rescued 15 of the fishing vessel’s crew and recovered the bodies of two deceased individuals in an operation that lasted well into Sunday, April 4.

No traces of Barokah Jaya‘s 15 remaining crew have yet been found, Basarnas officials said.

Meanwhile, the 15 survivors have since been brought to hospital as all had suffered minor injuries from the collision.
