Finnish shipping company Langh Ship has confirmed that its newest 7,800DWT vessel has been completed and is already en route to Europe.

Like its earlier sister vessels Olivia and Lovisa, Sofia is purposely built to carry stainless steel coils produced in Finland by local company Outokumpu. There will soon be a total of six vessels from Langh Ship operating on behalf of Outokumpu between the latter’s factory in Tornio, Finland and Terneuzen in the Netherlands.

The newbuild was designed to be capable of withstanding the harsh winter conditions characteristic of the northern part of the Baltic Sea, where Tornio is situated.

Sofia was built by China’s Wuhu Shipyard to a design by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI). Power is provided by a 4,500kW engine that can operate on MGO, LNG, biodiesel, or biogas.

A ballast water management system prevents the spread of invasive species through the water in the ballast tanks.

The cargo hold can also be flexibly rearranged to transport other cargo such as containers.
