One dead following fishing boat fire in Njardvik, Iceland

One person was killed after a fishing vessel caught fire in the town of Njardvik in southwestern Iceland on Tuesday, April 25.

The blaze on the locally-registered fishing vessel Grimsnes ignited at around 02:10 local time on Tuesday.

The incident occurred as the seven-strong crew were making final preparations before departing the harbour on a voyage scheduled for later that same morning.

Four of the crew were able to escape uninjured and another two were brought to a nearby health centre for treatment. One of the injured crewmembers has been placed in an induced coma while the other suffered burns on his back.

Grimsnes‘ captain told local news outlet Visir that the lone fatality was the cook, a 49-year-old Polish national who had been working as a member of the crew for over ten years.

Local authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
