Hoegh Autoliners names newest dual-fuel car carrier

Published on

Norwegian shipping company Höegh Autoliners formally named its newest pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) in a ceremony in Shizuoka, Japan, on Friday, June 20.

Höegh Sunrise is the fifth vessel in a series of 12 PCTCs. Höegh Aurora and Höegh Borealis, the first two ships, were delivered in 2024.

All ships in the series have been designed to be capable of transporting up to 9,100 cars, agricultural machinery, and mining equipment as well as general solo cargo.

The newbuild has an LOA of 199.92 metres, a beam of 37.62 metres, a draught of 10.8 metres, a depth of 14.52 metres, and a deadweight of over 25,000.

The freight will be carried on 14 decks including five liftable decks. All decks have been laid out to house electric vehicles, and these are also strengthened to allow transport of heavier project cargo if needed.

The PCTC will run on LNG and low-sulphur MGO, though its dual-fuel engines have been designed to allow conversion to permit operation on ammonia in the future.

Design work on Höegh Sunrise was undertaken by Finnish naval architecture firm Deltamarin and built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) in compliance with DNV class rules.
