Norwegian defence group Kongsberg announced on Thursday, October 22, that it had fired a naval strike missile (NSM) ballistic test vehicle from a standard 20-foot container in Norway during the autumn of 2026.
The firing demonstrated the company's new NSM mission module, a containerised launcher that holds up to four missiles.
Kongsberg said the test assessed safety, handling and loading logistics, and the system's capacity to cope with pressure and blast effects at launch.
According to the company, the container can be deployed without modification aboard ships or trucks, or straight from the ground. The standard shipping container format allows the launcher to travel using logistics and transport networks already in place.
Kongsberg is offering the module for areas with long coastlines and considerable distances between operating locations, where containerised units can be pre-positioned and deployed discreetly.
"There is growing interest in concepts that enable capabilities to be distributed and repositioned across large geographic areas, with a containerized solution representing one possible approach," said Ståle Mortensson, Vice President BD and Strategy in Missiles & Aerostructures at Kongsberg.
The test follows the October 2025 firing of an NSM test munition from the StrikeMaster launch vehicle, Australia's Bushmaster-based configuration of the NSM coastal defence system.
Earlier this week, Kongsberg received a NOK400 million ($42 million) contract for additional missiles for Denmark.
