Tour boat capsizes in Bali, Indonesia; all 89 passengers rescued

Published on:

A tour boat carrying 89 passengers capsized just as it was about to depart a coastal village in Indonesia's Bali province on Wednesday, June 4.

The vessel identified as The Tanis was backing out in the waters off Lembongan village on Nusa Lembongan island when its stern was struck by a large wave at around 16:30 local time on Friday. This then caused it to take on water and tilt to one side.

Video footage of the incident showed some of the passengers sliding off the deck and into the water as the boat continued to tilt.

A number of witnesses who were watching the incident from a nearby beach then rushed to assist the distressed occupants.

Local media said all 89 passengers, 77 of whom were foreign nationals, were safely rescued without serious injuries.

The boat, which has reportedly been in operation for only three months, eventually sank and has since settled on the seabed.

Wednesday's incident occurred less than three months after another tour boat had capsized in the waters off Bali. One of the passengers, identified as a 39-year-old Australian woman, perished in the earlier incident.
