Indonesian authorities report second fatal vessel accident off Bali in just over a month

Published on:

Two people were killed while a third has been reported missing after a boat carrying tourists capsized off Indonesia's resort island of Bali on Tuesday, August 5.

The vessel identified by local authorities as the tour boat Dolpin II had earlier departed Nusa Penida Island and was en route to Sanur in eastern Bali when it was struck by a large wave that then caused it to overturn while some 100 metres off the coast.

The boat was crewed by two people and was carrying 78 passengers including 73 foreign nationals when the incident occurred.

Rescuers later pulled the bodies of two deceased victims out of the water. Both have been identified as Chinese nationals.

The missing individual has meanwhile been identified as a 23-year-old Indonesian national.

Local media said that another 15 people have been brought to hospital, though the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

Tuesday's capsizing occurred just over a month after the ferry Tunu Pratama Jaya sank near those same waters. Eighteen people were killed while another 17 are still unaccounted for following that earlier incident.

In March of this year, the tour boat Sea Dragon 2 capsized off Bali, resulting in the death of 39-year-old Australian tourist Anna Blight.
