Cargo ship runs aground near Rauma, Finland

A cargo vessel operated by Sweden's AtoB@C shipping ran aground near the town of Rauma on Finland's western coast on Friday, June 20.

The Cyprus-registered 5,300DWT vessel Stellamar had just departed Kunda when its hull made bottom contact off the southern shore of Rauma's Iso Järviluoto island at around 10:20 local time on Friday.

No injuries have been reported among those who were on board the ship, which included the eight crewmembers and a Finnish pilot.

The incident did not result in any oil spills, the Finnish Border Guard confirmed via a social media post. However, a leak was reportedly detected in the ship's hull near the freshwater tank.

Stellamar was successfully refloated with the assistance of a tug less than one hour after it ran aground.

A border guard official said that the ship is presently moored in Rauma and that there was no pollution resulting from the incident.

The border guard has begun an investigation to determine whether the incident was the result of negligence, though authorities do not suspect that alcohol intake was a contributing factor.
