Navantia launched Roger de Lauria (F112), the second of five F110-class frigates for the Spanish Navy, at its Ferrol shipyard in A Coruña on Tuesday, October 27.
The shipbuilder said the launch came four months ahead of the schedule agreed with Spain's Ministry of Defence.
Construction will continue alongside the quay ahead of delivery in 2029. Navantia said installation and assembly work on the ship was substantially more advanced than is usual at launch, as was the case with first-of-class Bonifaz (F111).
Bonifaz is currently undergoing systems installation and start-up and is scheduled to begin sea trials in 2027.
Four frigates are now under construction at Ferrol. Five blocks of the third ship, Menéndez de Avilés (F113), are on the slipway following its keel-laying in July. Initial work on Luis de Córdova (F114) is under way at the yard's new Digital Block Factory.
The keel of Roger de Lauria was laid in April 2025, seven months early.
The five frigates will replace the navy's Santa María-class ships. Each measures 145 metres long and 18 metres wide, with a displacement of approximately 6,100 tonnes. The design features CODLAG propulsion and a combat architecture integrating Navantia's SCOMBA combat system with the SPY-7 radar.
The ship takes its name from the admiral of the Crown of Aragon and Sicily’s fleets.
