Keel laid for Spanish Navy's second F110-class frigate, first steel cut for third ship
Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has laid the keel of the future Roger de Lauria, the second F110-class frigate ordered by the Spanish Navy, at its facilities in Ferrol.
On the same day, Navantia cut the first steel to be used in the construction of the future Menéndez de Avilés, the third ship in the class.
Block assembly on class lead ship Ramon de Bonifaz at Navantia's slipway number two is now at 85 per cent. The company expects the ship will be launched into the water in the coming months.
Upon completion, each frigate will measure 145 by 18 metres and will displace approximately 6,100 tonnes. Armament will include those for anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare.
The five F110-class frigates are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2029. They will replace the Spanish Navy's ageing Santa Maria-class ships that were commissioned between 1986 and 1995.
The new frigates' missions will include escort and force projection.
