Police in Zimbabwe have reported the recovery of the remains of eight more victims of the ferry capsizing that occurred in Lake Kariba in the country's northwestern portion early last week.
The recent recoveries have brought the total number of fatalities from the August 11, 2026, capsizing of the ageing ferry Mbuya Nehanda to 92 from an earlier figure of 84 given by local authorities on Sunday, August 16.
The maritime accident is the deadliest on record to occur in Zimbabwe. Search and recovery operations are still ongoing.
Police have also begun requesting the victims' families to provide any information that may be relevant to the search for other passengers who may still be missing.
The August 11 incident occurred when Mbuya Nehanda overturned while transiting Lake Kariba between the towns of Kariba and Chalala in Mashonaland West province. Reports stated that the vessel overturned after being struck by a strong wave.
Only 77 survivors have been recorded while an unknown number of individuals remain unaccounted for, officials said.
The ferry was authorised to carry no more than 90 passengers and five crewmembers. However, reports revealed that the vessel may have been transporting as many as 153 passengers when the tragedy occurred.
