TUG AND SALVAGE WEEK

The Safeen Group, the marine arm of the AD Ports Group of the UAE, has taken delivery of a new ASD harbour tug from Sanmar Shipyards of Turkey. The Robert Allan Ltd-designed Semaih is ideal for ship handling duties with a design based on an intended low-manning operation with a high degree of machinery automation.

The RINA-classed tug has an LOA of 22.4 metres, a moulded beam of 10.85 metres, a maximum draught of 4.89 metres, and two Caterpillar 3512C 1,500kW, IMO Tier II diesel engines driving Schottel fixed-pitch propellers to deliver a bollard pull of 50 tonnes and a free running speed of 12 knots.

The deck equipment includes a DMT electrically-driven fore winch, a Data Hidrolik tow hook with pneumatic auto-release, and a capstan. For fendering, the tug relies on W-type rubber on the stem and stern, D-type rubber on the sides, and 800 ID by 400 ID cylindrical heavy duty rubber on the bow.

The tug can also take on firefighting duties thanks to the installation of a manually-operated monitor that draws water from a pump driven by the main engines. The pump has a flow rate of 1,200 cubic metres per hour.

The navigation and communications suite includes a radar, a GPS, an echo sounder, a chart plotter, a magnetic compass, an AIS/autopilot, a speed log, BNWAS, and area A2 GMDSS. Electrical power for these and other systems is supplied by two Caterpillar C4.4 diesel generators.

The accommodation spaces include a captain’s cabin with washbasin, two double cabins, a mess/lounge, a galley, and a water closet with shower. All interior spaces have HVAC and IMO-approved teak imitating floor surfaces. Sound levels are also greatly reduced due to resilient mounting for the engines and essential equipment including hydraulic pipes.

Semaih joins three earlier Sanmar-built, 32-tonne bollard pull tugs in the Safeen fleet.
