South Korea-based defence and technology firm Hanwha Systems and a number of local research organisations and universities will cooperate on the development of a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) optimised for search and rescue (SAR) operations.

The ₩25 billion (US$19.38 million) project to develop the AUV was commissioned by the Korea Institute of Marine Science and Technology Promotion.

The partners expect the initial examples of the craft to be in service by 2025.
