AWARDS 2024 | Best Large Fisheries Research Vessel – Odon de Buen – Armon Shipyard
Odon de Buen is a large, impressive and very capable fisheries research vessel. Spain has a substantial and far ranging modern fishing fleet and this well-equipped ship should be valuable in searching much of the globe for commercially sustainable fish stocks for that fleet to exploit.
The ship, as always at Armon, has been beautifully built and lavishly equipped with the best available modern fisheries research gear. She should serve Spain and its fishing industry very well for a long time.
"A combination of ultra-silent operation and advanced environmental credentials make the vessel special," Ricardo Garcia, Group Commercial Director at Armon Shipyard, told Baird Maritime.
"As a polar class vessel, it’s specifically designed to operate in some of the world’s most sensitive and demanding environments - including the Antarctic - while minimising its environmental footprint."
Thanks to its dual-fuel engines, Odon de Buen can operate on LNG stored in dedicated cryogenic tanks, significantly reducing emissions compared to conventional fuels.
"Equally impressive is its ultra-silent design, which ensures minimal acoustic disturbance to marine life — a critical feature for accurate scientific research, particularly in pristine polar ecosystems," added Garcia. "This makes it one of the most advanced and environmentally responsible research platforms of its kind."
