The Philippine Coast Guard and a commercial passenger vessel came to the aid of two fishermen who had gone adrift off the coast of Romblon province after their boat capsized late last week.

Virgen de Penafrancia VII, a Ro-Pax ferry owned by local company Star Horse Shipping Lines, was en route to Romblon’s Ambulong Port when its crew sighted the two castaways drifting in the water near their banca-type boat on Friday, November 26.

The ferry immediately sailed to Ambulong Port and then departed shortly afterwards with an embarked coast guard search and rescue (SAR) team to render assistance to the two fishermen.

The ferry crew and the coast guard SAR team later pulled the two survivors and their boat out of the water and transported them to shore. The fishermen were subsequentlty turned over to local medical personnel at the town of Magdiwang on Romblon.

The survivors said strong waves caused their boat to capsize as they were sailing between Sibuyan and Romblon islands on Friday.
