Spanish shipbuilder Navantia launched the Spanish Navy’s first S-80-class diesel-electric submarine into the water at its Cartagena facilities on Friday, May 7.

The future Isaac Peral will then undergo pierside trials, which will also include testing of the batteries’ charging capacity.

Navantia said the submarine’s sea trials will begin in the first quarter of 2022. Delivery to the navy will take place the following year.

Once completed, the future Isaac Peral will have an LOA of 80.8 metres, a hull diameter of 7.3 metres, a submerged displacement of approximately 3,000 tonnes, and an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system.
