German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has entered into an agreement with the Israeli Ministry of Defence on the framework conditions for the purchase of three Dakar-class diesel-electric submarines.

The Dakar-class boats will replace three 1990s-built Dolphin-class submarines in Israeli service.

TKMS said each of the Dakar-class submarines will be of a completely new design that is specifically engineered to fulfil the operational requirements of the Israeli Navy.
