The US Navy recently unveiled an image and other details of a new design of guided missile destroyer slated to replace the service’s current Arleigh Burke-class ships.

Advanced features of the DDG(X) destroyers will include increased missile capacity and longer-range offensive anti-surface and strike capabilities compared to the Arleigh Burke-class. There will also be provisions for high-power directed energy weapons such as lasers.

The navy added the DDG(X) ships will boast a 50 per cent increase in range and a 120 per cent increase in time on station compared to current destroyers.

The DDG(X) program is currently undergoing concept formulation with plans to enter preliminary design sometime during FY2022.
