US Navy commissions destroyer Michael Monsoor

The US Navy’s newest Zumwalt-class destroyer, USS Michael Monsoor, was commissioned on Saturday, January 26, at Naval Air Station North Island, California.

The ship honours Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor, a US Navy SEAL who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Ramadi, Iraq, on September 29, 2006.

The nearly 16,000-tonne Michael Monsoor was built by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works. The ship has a length of 182.9 metres, a width of 24.6 metres, and a navigational draught of 8.4 metres.

Two Rolls-Royce Marine Trent-30 gas turbines with a total output of 78 MW will propel the ship to speeds of up to 30 knots.
