US Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite has confirmed that a future Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer and a future Virginia-class attack submarine will be named USS John F. Lehman and USS Barb, respectively.

The destroyer will honour John F. Lehman, who had served as Secretary of the Navy under US President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1987 while the submarine will be the third US Navy ship to be named after the barbus, a ray-finned fish.

The future John F. Lehman will be built by Ingalls Shipbuilding and the future Barb will be built by Newport News Shipbuilding. Both are divisions of Huntington Ingalls Industries.
