German shipbuilder Lürssen has laid the keel of Emden, the seventh of a planned 10 Braunschweig-class corvettes slated for the German Navy.

The corvette will be the third post-war German Navy ship to be named after the famed seaport city in northwestern Germany.

Emden and four other sister vessels are expected to enter service beginning in 2022. The corvettes are being built by a consortium of Lürssen, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and German Naval Yards Kiel.
