The future JS Maya, the first of a new class of guided missile destroyers built by Japan Marine United (JMU), was handed over to the Japanese Ministry of Defence on Thursday, March 19.

The 170- by 21-metre vessel has a displacement of 8,200 tonnes, space for 300 crew, and a combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) propulsion system that delivers a speed of 30 knots.

The future Maya is also equipped with Lockheed’s Aegis combat system for anti-air warfare and anti-ballistic missile duties.
