The Indian Ministry of Defence, through its Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), has given initial approval for the planned purchase of eight newbuild corvettes for use by the country’s navy.

The corvettes will be used for a variety of roles including surveillance, escort, surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, coastal defence, and deterrence. The vessels’ design will be developed in-house by the Indian Navy.

The corvette procurement has an estimated cost equivalent to US$4.6 billion.
