An Indian Navy spokesperson has confirmed that a fire incident had occurred on board the service’s flagship and sole active aircraft carrier on Saturday, May 8.

The incident occurred while INS Vikramaditya – formerly the Russian Navy Kiev-class carrier Admiral Gorshkov – was berthed in Karwar Harbour in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

The navy said the carrier’s crew had ample early warning and were able to successfully extinguish the blaze, which ignited in one of the ship’s accommodation spaces. No injuries or major damage has been reported.

An investigation has since been launched to identify the cause of the fire.
