Pacific International Lines names fourth dual-fuel containership in series
Pacific International Lines (PIL) formally named a new container vessel in a ceremony in China on Monday, March 10.
Named after the Malay for "dew," Kota Embun is the fourth LNG dual-fuel container vessel in a series ordered by PIL from Jiangnan Shipyard in China. Its earlier sisters are the 2024-built Kota Emerald and Kota Eagle and the 2025-built Kota Ebony.
Kota Embun is the first PIL vessel to feature a bow windshield for improved aerodynamics, which the company expects will reduce fuel consumption and corresponding emissions by one per cent per annum on the Far East to West Coast Central and South America Service 2 route that the vessel will ply.
The vessel also incorporates various features such as high-performance anti-fouling coating to reduce fuel consumption, exhaust gas recirculation systems to cut-down on main engine methane emissions, and improved data connectivity to improve safety as well as operations efficiency.
Kota Embun and its sisters are the largest vessels in the PIL fleet, with each ship having an LOA of 335 metres, a beam of 51 metres, and a capacity of 14,000 TEUs. Power is provided by a dual-fuel engine that will run mainly on LNG fed by IMO Mark III tanks that can also be used for storing ammonia.
