Construction begins on new 13,000TEU ship for Pacific International Lines
China's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has begun construction of the second of five 13,000TEU container vessels ordered by Singapore-based shipping company Pacific International Lines (PIL).
The Neo-Panamax vessel will be fitted with dual-fuel engines that can also run on LNG in addition to low-sulphur fuel oil.
PIL said the series will also have the flexibility to meet the demands of different voyages, weather conditions, and load capacities.
The vessel will incorporate energy-saving features such as an optimised hull-form; variable-frequency drive motors for larger pumps and ventilation blowers; and lower-energy LED lighting.
When completed, the vessel will be fully compliant with the IMO's Energy Efficiency Design Index for newbuilds and the Carbon Intensity Indicator.
In addition, increased digitalisation such as AI and IoT will be incorporated in the design and equipment for the automation of tasks. PIL said these improvements will contribute to more efficient operations, provide a safe and modern working environment as well as enhance the welfare of the company's crews.
