Torpedo defence system selected for future Royal Canadian Navy destroyers
Ultra Maritime has received a CA$89 million (US$62 million) contract from Lockheed Martin Canada to supply three sets of torpedo defence systems for installation on the Royal Canadian Navy's River-class destroyers.
Ultra Maritime said the systems will provide a full "sense to effect" torpedo defence capability. The combination of a single in-line tow and automatic threat alerting will help maintain a high probability of detection coupled with low false alarm rate whilst minimising overall operator workload.
Ultra Maritime is also supplying hull-mounted sonars for the River-class ships, which are scheduled to enter service beginning in 2030 with the delivery of class lead ship HMCS Frasier.
The River-class destroyers will be based on BAE Systems' Type 26 design, examples of which are being built by the United Kingdom and Australia. The ships will have enhanced underwater sensors, state-of-the-art radar, and modern weapons.
Irving Shipbuilding expects to commence full rate production of the River-class ships within this year.
