Germany arms upcoming F128 frigates with UK-made gun systems in $39.8m deal

Four MEKO A-200 DEU anti-submarine frigates being built by TKMS will each receive three of the UK firm's stabilised 30mm mountings, with deliveries tied to the build schedule.

UK-based MS International said on October 21 that it had secured a £29.7 million ($39.8 million) contract through its wholly owned subsidiary, MSI-Defence Systems (MSI-DS), to provide 12 DS30M 30mm naval gun systems for the German Navy's F128 frigate programme.

The guns will be installed across four frigates. TKMS is the programme's prime contractor.

"Delivery of the systems is expected to take place in accordance with the programme schedule over the coming years," the company said. No specific delivery dates were disclosed.

The manufacturer describes the remote-controlled variant as a fully stabilised, non-deck-penetrating mounting that can be operated through third-party fire-control or combat management systems.

Germany had previously selected the MSI 30mm system in 2024 for the modernisation of its F123 Brandenburg-class anti-submarine frigates.

The F128 programme covers eight MEKO A-200 DEU frigates ordered in two batches of four. Germany turned to the design after cancelling the F126 programme in June.

The parliamentary budget committee approved the first four ships on July 8 and the second batch on October 7. The first frigate's keel was laid in May, and her handover is planned for 2029.
