The Swedish government is set to sell two diesel-electric submarines to Poland after these are retired from service later this year.

The objects of the potential sale are the final two of four Västergötland-class submarines built by Kockums (now Saab Kockums) for the Swedish Royal Navy.

HSwMS Södermanland (pictured) and HSwMS Östergötland were originally commissioned in 1989 and underwent an extensive refit in 2000. Both submarines afterward re-entered Swedish service in 2003 and 2004, respectively, as the only two ships of the Södermanland-class.

The sale of the submarines to Poland remains subject to approval by the Swedish parliament.
