Representatives of the Italian and Greek defence ministries have entered into a so-called implementing arrangement concerning the transfer of two frigates to the Hellenic Navy.
The objects of the transfer are the FREMM frigates Carlo Bergamini and Virginio Fasan, which are currently in service with the Italian Navy.
The implementing arrangement follows a memorandum of cooperation and a declaration of intent signed in September 2025.
Fincantieri, which built the two frigates, will also help facilitate the transfer process and provide support throughout the entire lifecycle of the two vessels, while also contributing to the strengthening of industrial cooperation with Greece.
Fincantieri said the agreement defines the key aspects relating to the transfer of the two ships, the initial and long-term support activities required to ensure their operational readiness, and the involvement of Greek industry partners in maintenance activities and the integration of new systems on board the vessels.
The FREMM frigates were designed and built jointly by Fincantieri and French defence shipbuilder the Naval Group for their respective countries' navies as well as export customers including Morocco, Egypt and the United States, where the ships will be known as the Constellation-class [of which only two will now be built, –ed].
Each frigate measures 144 by 19.7 metres, displaces approximately 6,700 tonnes, and can reach speeds of over 27 knots or sail up to 6,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 15 knots.
Accommodation is available for up to 200 crewmembers and other personnel.
