Builder's sea trials completed for US Navy amphibious ship Harrisburg

Acceptance trials are next for LPD 30, which HII expects to hand over to the US Navy later this year. The Navy's April budget documents had projected delivery in April 2027.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has completed conducting the builder’s sea trials of the future USS Harrisburg, the US Navy’s first San Antonio-class flight II amphibious transport dock (LPD).

Over several days of trials, Ingalls Shipbuilding personnel assessed the ship's propulsion and steering, as well as its onboard control, communications and mission systems and its combat systems integration.

HII said the ship returned to the yard with major test objectives met.

Harrisburg will next prepare for acceptance trials. HII expects to deliver the ship to the US Navy before the end of this year.

Harrisburg is the 14th LPD in the San Antonio-class, which will take the place of the US Navy’s Whidbey Island-class and Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ships.

The flight II LPDs have improved aviation and well deck facilities designed to accommodate newer helicopters and LCAC-100-class air-cushion landing craft (LCAC).

The ship measures approximately 208 by 32 metres. Her well deck can accommodate one utility landing craft or two LCACs, while the flight deck and hangar can support helicopters and the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

Harrisburg’s keel was laid in January 2022, and the ship was launched at Pascagoula, Mississippi, in October 2024 before being christened in January 2025.

Ingalls Shipbuilding is the exclusive builder of the San Antonio-class LPDs and has delivered LPDs 17 through 29.
