A fire broke out on a berthed cargo ship at the Port of Cardiff in the UK on Tuesday, August 25.
The Marshall Islands-registered bulk carrier Federal Welland was at Queen Alexandra Docks with a cargo of 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal when a blaze suddenly ignited in her hold.
Numerous plumes of smoke were already emanating from the ship by the time firefighting appliances including tugs arrived in the area to render assistance.
The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS), one of the responding agencies, has reported that all of the ship's crew are safe and accounted for.
Authorities have assured that there is no immediate risk to the public as a result of the incident. However, residents and businesses located near the port have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed until the area has been cleared of smoke.
Residents said they were still able to smell the smoke coming from the port as late as Tuesday night (local time).
A spokesperson for Associated British Ports (ABP), the owner and operator of the Port of Cardiff, said that ABP is continuing to support the emergency response operation and that it is working with the SWFRS and other agencies.
