Dutch officials have confirmed that one person was killed while six others suffered injuries as a result of an explosion at the Port of Rotterdam on Thursday, August 13.
The incident occurred at around 11:30 local time at a storage tank as it was undergoing maintenance within the area of the port occupied by energy commodities trading company Gunvor.
Police said that a crime scene has been established and that the incident is under investigation. Officials added, however, that there has been no identified evidence indicating the blast was the result of sabotage.
A spokesperson for Gunvor said the company is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
Other companies at the port temporary halted their operations and ordered the evacuation of on-site personnel as a precaution.
Other areas of the port meanwhile suffered a power outage on Thursday. However, a port authority spokesperson clarified that this was not connected to the Gunvor storage tank explosion.
The same spokesperson confirmed that the blast did not affect the port's LNG terminals.
