Worker dies following accidental fall at Japanese shipyard

Published on:

A worker at a shipyard in Japan's Nagasaki Prefecture died of injuries he suffered as a result of an accidental fall on Saturday, March 15.

The incident at Oshima Shipbuilding in Saikai City occurred on the morning (local time) of Saturday when the unnamed victim fell from a platform approximately four metres high just as he was preparing to perform welding works.

The worker was found lying on the ground with a head wound and was transported to hospital shortly afterwards. Tragically, he was pronounced deceased at 03:30 on Sunday, March 16.

An initial probe by local police revealed that although the victim was wearing safety equipment at the time of the incident, he had failed to fasten his safety belt to a nearby fall prevention harness.

The worker was taking measurements before performing welding activities on the platform on which he was standing.

An investigation has since been launched to identify the probable causes of the mishap.
