VIDEO | Passengers evacuated after ferry suffers onboard fire in Helsinki, Finland
Around 300 people were evacuated from a passenger vessel after a fire ignited on board while it was approaching a ferry terminal in Finland's capital city on Thursday, August 14.
Megastar, a Ro-Pax ferry operated by Estonian shipping company Tallink Silja, was manoeuvring to dock at Helsinki's West Terminal when a bus that was among its vehicle cargo suddenly caught fire shortly after 00:00 local time on Thursday.
Firefighters and rescuers were already waiting at the terminal by the time the ferry arrived, allowing for the safe evacuation of all the passengers. No injuries were reported.
At around 01:00, an emergency response official said that the damage was limited to the affected bus and that the fire had a low risk of spreading to other areas of the ship.
Local media reported that the fire was finally extinguished at around 03:00.
Marika Nöjd, Tallink Silja's Communications Director, told Finnish state news agency Yle that Megastar's crew had successfully put out the fire using the ferry's sprinkler system.
As investigation is ongoing to identify the cause of the fire.
