Four people have died and five were injured after a fire broke out on a vessel undergoing repairs at the ASL Shipyard Indonesia in Batam on June 24.

In a statement, the shipyard's parent company, ASL Marine Holdings, confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 14:15 local time. The fire was on board a floating storage and offloading vessel (FSO) that was alongside a jetty for afloat repairs.

The FSO involved in the incident was Federal II, a tanker built in 1990. A video posted on social media showed the forecastle area of the vessel engulfed in flames.

ASL Marine stated that all victims were employees of a subcontractor. The five injured people are currently receiving medical treatment. The company said it will work with authorities, the FSO owner, and the subcontractor to provide assistance to the affected victims and their families.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway. All work on the FSO has been suspended until the cause is established.
