VIDEO | Fire ignites on supply boat near Spain's Algeciras Port; all seven crew rescued

Published on:

A supply boat caught fire while in the Bay of Gibraltar near the Port of Algeciras in Spain on Wednesday, June 25.

The locally-registered Ceutamar Cinco was alongside an anchored containership with her crew ready to transfer supplies to the larger vessel when a blaze ignited on board at around 17:30 local time on Wednesday.

The crew managed to manoeuvre the supply boat away from the containership before they were forced to jump overboard as the fire spread through their vessel and sent up a column of thick, black smoke.

Personnel from Spain's Salvamento Maritimo national search and rescue agency later arrived on small boats and pulled all seven of Ceutamar Cinco's crew out of the water.

No serious injuries have been reported among the crew. Although two individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, neither of them required hospitalisation.

Salvamento Maritimo and the Algeciras Port Authority had also deployed tugs and firefighting vessels to extinguish the blaze on the supply boat before towing it to a nearby pier.

Photographs taken of Ceutamar Cinco following the fire showed that the vessel's wheelhouse had almost completely burned down with only the supporting frames left standing.

Local officials have assured that the incident did not result in any pollution despite the damage suffered by the supply boat.
