Three Swiss Army personnel were injured in an accident involving a training boat on Lake Lucerne near Gersau, in the Canton of Schwyz, on the evening (local time) of Monday, October 19.

The Swiss Army said the accident took place at about 19:00 amid a military exercise. At the time, the three soldiers from Engineer Recruit School 73 were on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) used for training.

All three were taken to hospital. One was transported by local air rescue service Rega, while the other two were taken by civilian ambulances.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. A military judicial investigation has begun.

Local news outlets have identified the RIB involved as having been manufactured by UK-based Ribcraft.

The district of Gersau had earlier advised residents that an endurance exercise for Swiss Army boat personnel would take place on the lake from 11:00 on Tuesday, October 20, to 01:00 on Wednesday, October 21. The notice also scheduled the refuelling of military boats from a truck at the Gersau ferry landing in the early hours of Wednesday.
